31 Nights of Horror VII, Night 9: Mayhem
Three sentence review:
There are two recent horror films about extreme workplace violence: The Belko Experiment (2016) and Mayhem (2017). My vote goes to Mayhem and I highly recommend it for fans of action, gore, viral outbreaks and sticking it to the man. The Walking Dead’s Steven Yuen and The Babysitter’s Samara Weaving team up to survive the worst work day of all time with epic results.
I thought Mayhem was interesting. I like the idea that it represents how we’re all pretty much storing our barbaric natures behind a thin wall. The moment that wall comes down, we literally return to our animal instincts and tribalism. At least that’s how I saw it.
Love that take. That’s what I liked about the “virus” – that it merely heightened our inherent instincts of rage, lust, etc. That really was interesting. We are all monsters inside, some people just aren’t as good as masking it!
Right, which is one reason this movie hit me so hard. All we need is one solar flare or some EMP to take out the electrical grid and we’d go back about 500 years. Some widespread virus could make us all seek back to that tribal method. It’s scary stuff.
I have mayhem as one of my marathon films so I’ve thought about this point of view quite a lot. Lol
